Foot Pain: Fallen Arches, Bunions and Hammer Toes

We use our feet to carry us wherever we go, but when they are sore, walking or even standing is painful. Millions of people, primarily women, suffer from persistent foot pain that is caused by improperly fitted shoes. Poorly fitted shoes can cause fallen arches, bunions and hammer toes, all of which can be corrected with chiropractic care.

A bunion occurs when the tip of the great toe misaligns towards the outside of the foot. This creates a tender swollen, often arthritic bump on the inside of the great toe. This bump is known as the bunion. The discomfort from this painful joint can limit activities as simple as walking. Bunions are virtually non-existent in cultures that do not wear shoes.

Many people purchase shoes without considering whether or not the arch of the shoes complements their own. Far too often, people buy shoes that do not have sufficient arch support. Lack of arch support and pointed shoes, such as women’s dress shoes and cowboy boots, cause fallen arches that lead to misalignments in the arches and the toes of the feet.

General symptoms may also be present such as leg cramps, knee pain, hip pain, leg pain as well as spinal disorders. Other foot related symptoms may be corns, calluses, bunions, foot pain or circulation problems.

The foot plays an extremely important role in the structural mechanics of the body. The correction of poor foot mechanics must not be overlooked. Your chiropractor is trained in foot examination and correction.
